The final vote count has been announced and Citrus Heights dad, trucker, and community leader Manuel Perez will join the San Juan School Board, representing Area 7.

Perez entered the race to succeed the late Steve Miller with a sincere desire to make San Juan schools better for all students, including his daughter. Perez’s two older children had already graduated from the District, giving him first-hand experiences in policies and practices that did not serve students. Academic achievement scores were unacceptable to Manuel and he wanted to get at the root of the issue, making school campuses safer for students and faculty, and refocusing on the fundamentals.

“I am running for school board because I believe that we need to make sure that every child in San Juan is given a quality education and feels safe going to school,” said Manuel Perez. “I am committed to working with the school board to address the critical issues facing our schools”.

The Perez campaign was a local team effort, including his family and neighbors, leaders from the Citrus Heights City Council and business community, and volunteers from the Sacramento County Republican Party.

“I was amused that Democrats and union reps on social media disparaged Manuel for acknowledging the support from the SacCountyGOP,” said Chair Betsy Mahan. “The website of Manuel’s opponent listed endorsements from the who’s who of Democrat organizations and unions. They just didn’t like uppity Republicans entering their turf. We knew that the plummeting test scores were a result of their failed policies and political indoctrination, which has only served to distract students from their studies,” said Mahan.

This race garnered interest from both parties because it represented a possible change in the policy direction for the liberal school board. The three Board members who support transparency, a focus on academics, and parental rights, endorsed Perez. The three who have advocated for integration of a progressive political agenda into the curriculum endorsed Sarama, his opponent.

“While there are many great things about the schools in San Juan, I have been very concerned with School Board policies that have taken parents out of decision making process on matters directly impacting our children,” said Perez.  “I am seeing changes in our community, impacting our quality of life. I’m not the kind of person who can look away – I want to solve problems. As an appointed member of the Citrus Heights Construction Board of Appeals, I can bring my experience to assist with school facility issues, and I want every child to have the resources available to rise to their full potential.”

Change is coming to the San Juan School District, and we encourage all local parents and taxpayers to remain active and aware so this new majority can create an environment where students can thrive.
