Elk Grove School District to Hold Community Meetings on Sex Ed Program

In compliance with the California Education Code, the Elk Grove Unified School District offers Comprehensive Sexual Health Education to students enrolled in 5th grade, Science 7, and Health. The Education Code also requires that parents and guardians be notified of this program including the instructional requirements and adopted curriculum.

According to the District, they endorse “a comprehensive sexual health education program that encourages abstinence and acknowledges the family as an important contributor.”

School Districts do have control over implementation of state mandated curriculum, and they need to hear from parents who want to be sure sex ed is age-appropriate, including class instruction and books available to younger students in the school library. 

It is also important for parents to know when classes will be held so they can discuss the topic with their children in advance and afterward, consistent with their values and family history.
